The Meaning of Lent

The English word ‘Lent’ comes from the Anglo-Saxon word Lencten, meaning ‘Spring’. In other languages the word comes from the Latin, Quadragesima – a period of 40 days.  In the Christian tradition the forty days is understood to refer to a time of intense prayer and preparation; we remember the biblical stories of Noah and the flood of 40 days, the forty years the Israelites spent wandering in the wilderness and Christ’s forty day fast in the desert in preparation for his earthly ministry.

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Season of Lent. It is a season of penance, reflection, and fasting which prepares us for Christ’s Resurrection on Easter Sunday.

Mass in St Cronan’s (Balla) on Wednesday at 7 and 10 am

and in St Anne’s (Belcarra) at 7.30 pm

The 7 am Mass will be celebrated weekly

on Wednesdays during Lent (alternating between churches)

Why not make the effort to attend?

John Paul Awards, Tuam, Nov 5th, 2013

Posted on Updated on

The Pope John Paul II award ceremony  took place this year on Tuesday Nov. 5th at 5.45pm in Tuam Cathedral.    Over 200 young people received their awards this years with quite a few receiving their Papal Cross.
Archbishop Neary presented them with their awards and our special guest was Peter McConnell who climbed Mt. Everest earlier in the year.  It was a great evening of celebration for our young people who do so very much in our church.

If you would like more information on the John Paul II awards click here.

Congratulations to the students and staff of Balla Secondary School on their success in the programme.  Comhghairdeas to Fr Denis also.

Do This in Memory of Me

Do This in Memory is a parish based programme of preparation for First Communion centred in the parish celebration of the Sunday Eucharist and in the home. The programme resources are designed to facilitate parents/guardians, families and the parishes’ active involvement in the preparation for the sacrament. It complements and supports the work of sacramental preparation in the parish school or the religious education programme in the parish. The programme takes place once a month for eight months before First Eucharist.

Please see our special page to see the dates and times for this year’s celebrations.
